Engineering Geological Field Visit

Posted on June 10, 2025

The Department of Applied Sciences at Advanced College of Engineering and Management (ACEM) successfully organized a comprehensive two-day ‘Engineering Geological Field Visit’ for the second-semester students, held in the Dhading and Gorkha districts. The visit was expertly led by geologist Mr. Sushant Sapkota, along with Mr. Indra Bahadur Tamang.

This field-based academic activity was designed to enhance students’ practical understanding of engineering geology and its applications in real-world scenarios. Throughout the excursion, students explored various geological features and engaged in detailed observational and analytical exercises.

The visit provided a unique opportunity for students to bridge classroom theory with field-based learning, helping them gain valuable insights into geological challenges encountered in civil and infrastructure engineering projects, especially within Nepal’s diverse terrain.

Objectives of the Field Visit:

  • To study the Rock Mass Rating (RMR) system and understand its application in excavation and support design.

  • To conduct study and classification of landslides using the Varnes classification system.

  • To perform site investigations relevant to the construction of tunnels, bridges, dams, and buildings.

  • To prepare an Engineering Geological Route Map based on field observations.

  • To perform slope analysis and understand stability conditions in varied terrains.

This field visit stands as a testament to ACEM's commitment to providing experiential learning opportunities, equipping future engineers with essential field skills and technical knowledge required in engineering geology and infrastructure development.
